The Springfield Bonsai Society (SBS) is a non-profit organization founded in the 1970’s. SBS is dedicated to helping individuals in improving their bonsai skills and promoting this ancient art throughout the Greater Springfield area. SBS invites you to learn and observe a horticultural art form that is constantly changing and growing.
You can take advantage of our monthly newsletter, meetings and workshops. We also host a few Bonsai Show and a year end Auction-fund raiser every year.
SBS meetings are held at 7:00 pm on the second Monday of the month, February through November, at the Washington Park Botanical Garden, 1740 W. Fayette, Springfield, IL 62704 [located near the corner of Fayette and Chatham Rd., next to the Carillon], unless otherwise noted in the Calendar of Events. All events are open to the public. You can park in the front (by the Carillon) or the back (by the service entrance).
The next meeting will focus on Bunjin style Bonsai. What is bunjin, you ask? It is a style of bonsai that does not follow the usual rules of bonsai. Trees created with this style are also known as literati. This technique was made popular by scholarly bonsai practitioners in ancient China. At first glance the tree might be violating the basic rules of Bonsaibut it is quite evocative in its abstract form. Bring along a leggy pine or bougainvillea to try your hand at this technique. |
